1988 Land Cruiser BJ74
Stock Number: 4390
For the off-road enthusiast, the Toyota Land Cruiser is always going to be highly prized. This 1988 BJ74 Land Cruiser is offered with only 55K verified miles, and ticks all the important boxes. From its 3.5L torquey turbodiesel to the factory lockers, and trick FRP removable roof, this Cruiser has it all! This truck has been refinished at some point this classic Dark Gray Metallic two-tone (155.) The body is in good shape with only a few minor dings, scratches, and scuffs associated with normal use. Recently serviced, and imported with all the supporting documentation, this rig is a true Japanese Classic!
The interior of this 70 is in much better condition than the average 32-year-old rig. Other than a small rip in the driver’s side seat bottom, there isn’t too much to nitpick over. The dash is in good shape and is devoid of any cracks or discoloration. The gray material contrasts nicely against black carpets and a taupe colored headliner and tweed upholstery. The front buckets and rear bench are soft to the touch and keen eyes will notice the “turbo” moniker embroidered on them. Power amenities arent what you’d expect when you look at the rugged exterior, but power mirrors and locks are standard equipment and a tilt wheel gives drivers large and small a comfortable driving position. A digital clock complete with a stopwatch function is mounted on the dash and the OEM radio works as it should. The front windows are the manual roll-down type and feature rare OEM rain guards that are still in good shape. If you prefer using the climate control system for heat and A/C, the option is available. The top is actually finished with headliner, instead of exposed plastics. This lowers wind noise and makes the interior look like a fixed roof model; the headliner itself is devoid of any major rips, tears, or stains. Rear occupants have plenty of shoulder and headroom and benefit from sliding rear windows. When the rear seats are folded away, horizontal bars protect the glass against any swaying cargo in the boot. The rear barn doors open to provide a wide loading area, which is carpeted as well. The typical saggy rear hinges are noted as working smoothly on this particular example, which is uncommon.
Automotive diehards care about the running gear and are happy to spend a few more bucks for the upgraded capabilities this LX provides. Under the long, flat bonnet, rests the massive 13B-T. This nearly 3.5L four-cylinder fires easily to life with a turn of the key, which is no problem as our technicians have installed two new batteries which should last another four years or more. A fresh oil and filter service ensures that no scheduled maintenance is needed for the next three thousand miles. Acceleration isn’t blistering but the automatic transmission and turbodiesel work well in combination. The automatic shifts as it should, without any clunks or grinds. A selective transfer case allows the drivers to use 2WD for better fuel economy, and the 4WD when the going gets tough. The most important option that comes on this BJ74 is the front and rear locking differentials (K084.) These units are prized for what they do off the tarmac. This unstoppable brute also rolls on new specialty tires, mounted on freshly powder coated steelies. The color contrast and style harken back to the design used on the previous generation Cruisers and give the car some retro flair. The suspension isn’t the most refined but handles the rigors of daily driving without chattering your bones, and the brakes are confident and linear.
Toyota made some stellar off-road beasts but this one is near the pinnacle of desirability. Its locking differentials, short wheelbase, and diesel power inspire confidence in the worst conditions. However, the interior is surprisingly comfortable and well-appointed. This low mileage, clean condition car would make a great SUV to own, and is a certain Japanese Classic!
