Quantum Radar & the Car that Cleans the Air

The “Roger Billings Technology Spotlight” showcases ‘quantum radar’ – a new type of radar that is safer, more effective, and stealthier that what is in use today. The “Breakthroughs in Science” looks at the work of Alessandro Volta as he relentlessly overcame the roadblocks to bring about the modern battery.

Dr. Billings relates a fascinating, behind-the-scenes saga of the 1972 Urban Vehicle Design Competition – also called the Clean Air Race – where University students from across the country entered their designs for what they hoped would be the most pollution-free car. He accounts the extraordinary obstacles, important lessons learned, and how, in the end, a hydrogen internal combustion engine could win a competition for the least-polluting car – beating even the electric vehicles.
