Tae Sung Kim, but he known as Henie Kim in the field. he was initially a designer, and he studied Furniture design. So, he designed furniture for a long time.Then, he was very interested in the Photography, so he worked in Fashion photography for a long time too.

Well… I usually worked with just design, but I accidently started car related job with Mohenic Garages. Mohenic Garages does not simply just fix and customize the car; it is about rebuilding as a new. Through the rebuilding process, there is taste of design involved, personality and different characters involved.

I didn’t start this to make it the way it is now. I initially started on my own, and due to my needs, I started researching factories and requested for customization on my car. I was not really happy with what I got. Even if we request it at a factory, there are arguments involved, and Korean market itself is very limited to ‘Car Culture’. Then I realized that there are many other people who understand and share what I feel. So, that is why I started this on my own. I didn’t have a team or anything, but I was on my feet visiting the entire subcontractor.

Rather than refusal, they did not understand. They never worked this way, and they had no experience of rebuilding old car like a new one. It was a weird thing for them rather than a rejection. They would have done it if they could.

Car history in Korea started 40 years ago, but our country’s car culture is behind the times. I agree that 40 years is relatively short time to produce global cars like Hyundai does, but there is no car culture or a car model that has history like Western countries have. This could possibly be the obstacle for Korean car culture to diversify.

There is a Pajero, launched in 1982. It has been around for more than 30 years. At that time, Hyundai brought in the model 100% to re-produce. Therefore there are not that many in Korea and the only car that has the history would be Galloper. Galloper’s base is Pajero and the original form was not damaged from the beginning, so it may be the only model that has this kind of value.

Our work process is what you know. We firstly buy the base car. Cars that are like 20 years old. Actually what we only use from the car is the base and the shell. The other parts are broken down to industrial waste. The most important work involved is to make the frame and cabin come alive in our car. This takes up half of our process. Then we start the job of putting the Mechanism into structure. After this is done, we work on the interior and exterior that can show our identity. Then the car is done. Put into big steps, I think that is about it.

There is a significant difference between the mass produced and hand-made cars. Actually you cannotreally compare the two. Mass produced cars are based on the needs and wants of the mass, and they cannot satisfy the niche Car maniacs. For example, the 4X4 is Classic 4-Wheel drive. It is known worldwide that JEEP is continuing to produce this, but actually now Landrover is coming out with new models, and they are giving up on the classic 4-wheel drive.

Many car models are now mainly focusing more on profitable or economic issues such as environmental issues, fuel-efficiency, gas costs and so on. And this is surely the sad news for the people who are involved in the Niche Car culture. So, there are some handmade car brands in USA and Europe that produces like 10 to 200 cars in a year for the Car fans, but it does not exist in Korea. I think that is the whole point of the concept, creating conceptual cars for the niche. I think it is completely different with mass-produced cars.

Honestly, it is difficult to say, but it is not possible to compare to other brands. I personally think that Mohenic Garages is the only one to make rebuild cars in Korea. But, nowadays there are more companies that restore Galloper.

It is just widening within the Customization level, but it is not rebuilding. Customization and rebuilding is totally different concept. If you look at rebuild as a restore, then customization is not the first thing. The first thing would be the reconstruction. It is about how to secure the durability, how to secure the condition like a new car and so on, but customization is even close to that. There are no companies that do this, but when you look at it from outside, it looks more or less similar because the interior and exterior looks clean and nice. But the rebuilding concept is not all about that. I think that we are the very first ones to start this industry in Korea.

There were many changes in 2~3 years. Actually, Mohenic Garages started about 3 years ago, then It costed around $15 ~ 16,000 to rebuild at that time. Back then, people were call
