Ten Years After – I’m Going Home (Woodstock, 1969) *FIRST VIDEO OF 2019

January 14, 2019. Before discussing the song, a brief intro on the video. There is a scene in Mulholland Drive where Adam Kesher, the film’s fictional movie director, is driving home after a major altercation at the studio about the choice of an actress he did not approve of. He says repeatedly into his car’s cell phone to his secretary: “I’m going home. Hold all calls. No, I’m going home Cynthia. I’m going home.” I was going to use that scene as an intro to this song, but a clip of it was not available … and I have the film on VHS and DVR, but not on hard drive. I don’t have much on hard drive right now as it is as my old drive crashed back on Christmas Eve and, although replaced with a clean install, the repair guy could not save the many thousands of work files. It will likely take many weeks if not months to completely replace my library of visual clips and films, although not all of the stuff I had needed to be on my PC anymore really, and could have been deleted. Well, they are deleted now, lol. Anyway, the idea still was a good one and I used what was available along with a lot of other great visual treats. The song then functions as not only Adam’s story about going home to see his wife, but as the soundtrack of Americana past and recent past. We also get to see Alvin Lee in action from the concert.

Like millions of other teens and young adults, I missed going to Woodstock in 1969 and ended up watching it on film in 1970 when a bunch of us flocked into what was then the largest movie theater in our area, complete with surround sound speakers. Everybody probably has their own idea what the best part of the film (and the best act) was: there were many, from Santana’s “Soul Sacrifice” to the “Star Spangled Banner” medley by Jimi Hendrix which closed the show. Without question there was a lot of impressed viewers when Alvin Lee and Ten Years After came on to perform a song by “Helicopter” (sic) called “I’m Going Home” … a medley created by Lee and recorded originally in 1968 for the live album entitled Undead. Perplexed and stunned viewers too … what did we just see?? HOW did he play that guitar like that?? A lot of riffs sounded almost impossible to play. Of course little did any of us know that, along with a performance of “At The Hop” by Sha-Na-Na, we were also witnessing the birth of the first retro wave: The 50’s Revival in the 1970’s.
